I have to confess that I am finding this stream to be somewhat disconnected and confusing.
I have to agree that an anonomous plea does not have the same appeal a one in which the solicitor is identified. Is "alumni" a concerned alum or another avenue for administrative plea for money?
I would also suggest that some specifics might help. What exactly is the nature and extent of the shortfall? What kind of help is required? If I give, am I giving to an entity that is on the brink of financial collapse and therefore my gift might be wasted?
I remember a crisis appeal about ten years ago- coinciding with the last economic downturn. Buxton might need to consider a more pro-active, organized and professional look to it's funding. Many non-profits, private schools etc. are in trouble now. So are many of our employers. These are difficult times and everyone wants our money. An appeal based upon an assumption of "unique, special experience," etc. is not enough. The Buxton community needs to beome more sophisticated in its funding strategy.
