Progressive
Education
Buxton
was founded over 75 years ago as a small progressive community
school. We believe a student's whole experience at school
is part of his or her educationwhat goes on outside
the classroom is just as important as what goes on inside.
Students are nurtured and challenged intellectually, artistically,
emotionally and morally. We accomplish this through rigorous
academics, a varied and active arts program, a caring faculty
and a community of people, young and old, who all work to
create a growth-promoting, meaningful experience for students.
Community
At Buxton we not only believe in community, we live it,
day in and day out. Most of our faculty reside on campus
and all of our lives are inextricably interwoven. Family-style
meals, wake-up or bed-check, Friday night recreation committee,
raking leaves together during Work Program, or going to
the local coffeehouse to chat exemplify our personal approach.
The creation of a compelling community of learners, workers,
thinkers and artists is fostered by dormitory living, tri-annual
room change, and sound faculty presence.
Small Size
We are an intentionally small school of 90 students and
20 faculty members situated on a historic family estate
amid the beauty of the Berkshire Mountains. We believe students
flourish when they feel safe and when they are well-known
by those around themboth adults and peers. The manageable
number of students at Buxton also allows us to continue
our 50-year tradition of the All-School Trip.
Diversity
Part of what makes our size so powerful is our deliberate
commitment to diversity of every kind: race, background,
talents, abilities, gender, and personalities. Our intimate,
diverse culture allows everyone in the community to form
meaningful relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds.
The differences we bring to Buxton serve to enrich all that
we experience at school and in the larger world.
Art in Education and Everyday Life
Students who already identify themselves as artists can
be assured that their talents are valued and nurtured by
our programs in the visual arts, ceramics, photography,
writing, theatre, music and dance. We also encourage participation
by those who have shied away from the arts in the past,
knowing that they will benefit by engaging themselves creatively,
whether it be through singing in chorus, attending a figure-drawing
class, or working on sets for the All-School Play.
Individual
Growth
Faculty generate narrative report letters three times a
year. This allows teachers to comment upon and evaluate
a student's progress, to challenge someone to work harder
or praise another for progress made. Students evaluate themselves
also, creating a give-and-take essential for a comprehensive
assessment.
College
Admission
Our outstanding college admission record is not an end in
itself but rather a natural outcome of the demanding academics
and varied life we live at Buxton.
